Social Degeneration
Is our world slowly getting less intelligent? In the novella The Time Machine shows that the humans are split into two species, the Morlocks and Eloi. Since humans evolved into two species, the intellectual level can not be the intellectual level cannot be the same as it was with one species, but the Morlocks are just a little more intelligent. They have also physically evolved where the Eloi’s bodies are not as mature as the human bodies now, and the Morlocks have evolved into a body completely different than humans.
“The intellectual level of one of our five-year-old children-asked me, in fact, if I had come from the sun in a thunderstorm.” This is how the Time Traveler describes the Eloi’s intellectual level when he first met them. This helps prove that the Eloi are less intelligent than humans. As humans, we may have wondered where a person had come to us out of thin air, but we would not have thought that the person had come from the sky. It is also says in the story that the Eloi have a more primitive language than the humans and the Time Traveler had to learn it to communicate with the Eloi.
“Their hair, which was uniform curly, came to a sharp end at the neck and cheek; there was not the faintest suggestion of it on the face, and their ears were singularly minute. The mouths were small, with bright red, rather thin lips, and the little chins ran to a point. The eyes were large and mild; and-this may seem egotism on my part- I fancied even that there was a certain lack of the interest I might have expected in them.” This quote shows that the Eloi have changed physically from humans of our time into something similar but less mature. Their intellectual level is of the same of a 5-year-old. Because of this, they have a struggle to survive, even though they are meant to be hunted, they cannot fight back.
“You can scarce imagine how nauseatingly inhuman they looked-those pale, chinless faces and great, lidless, pinkish-grey eyes!” The Morlocks are very different from the humans now days. They thrive in the darkness, while we thrive in the daylight and darkness. They have no chins, and pinkish-grey eyes. Their diet is mainly humans. The Morlocks are a lot different than the humans today, and I am proud to not be like the Morlocks.
In conclusion, it is true that the world is becoming less intelligent and more primitive. The Eloi believe in things we would not even think of considering as an option. They also are not as tall or muscular than us and in the book are also said to just be like cattle for the Morlocks. This shows the world is becoming more primitive where your life is at a high risk of being taken more than today because we are able to provide food for ourselves without killing people to get it. Showing that if what happens in the novella our world will become primitive and unintelligent.
